Thank you for reaching out for help for your cousin. It shows how much you really care about the welfare of your cousin.

The advice you received to listen to her and provide unconditional support is 'spot-on'. However, she may need even more help from specially trained people who can help her come out of that place of pain and despair. Please take a look at a list of important things to do to help someone who is suicidal on these links: http://www.metanoia.org/suicide/whattodo.htm , and http://www.afsp.org/i-am/worried-about-someone . Reminder: do not leave a distressed person alone, if they tell you or you suspect they have a plan to hurt themselves. Seek help! Find a family member, trusted adult or a professional who can intervene. she may not be happy about it immediately, but eventually she will when she gets beyond her crisis and realizes that 'it gets better'.

It is possible that she feels overwhelmed by concerns over becoming a new Mom, and need help sorting things out, or in creating a healthy plan for herself and her new responsibilities. she could be very depressed, and feeling pain over something unrelated. Only she would really know, but it is clear that she is reaching out for help. Encourage her to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at: 1-800-273-TALK (or http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/)

I would refer you to other similar suicide prevention resources that can help her find relief from her pain without causing self-injury, for example www.metanoia.org/suicide , www.afsp.org/, or call us at 2NDFLOOR (at 1-888-222-2888, anytime).
