  • Emancipation

I was wondering who I should speak to about wanting to get emancipated? I am almost 16 and am currently job hunting, if i manage to get a job, save up, and show that I am responsible enough, will i get emancipated?

I am sorry you feel like you need to leave your home. Becoming emancipated is not as easy as it it seems. While a parent or guardian can no longer make decisions for the child, the child is no longer entitled to financial support from the parent or guardian. So before going through this process you really need to try to seek help. If you leave home as an under age teen it is not safe and may involve law enforcement if your parent or guardian contacts them to find you. It may be helpful to get a trusted adult to meditate with your family and give you an opportunity to share your concerns and feelings. You may want to reach out to your school counselor for immediate help with school issues or to obtain resources or referrals so don't wait to try that avenue. If you feel that you are in an unsafe environment at home then you can call DCP&P at 1-877-NJ ABUSE, they are available 24/7 to help you. You can call us anytime at 888-222-2228 you need further assistance. Thanks for reaching out to 2NDFLOOR.
