Many people struggle with self-esteem. I would try talking to him about why he feels the way he does. There could be something that is influencing the way he feels about himself. Discuss ways in which he thinks he could improve his self-esteem. It is important to know that this responsibility is not on you. It is good that you want to help him, but he also has to want to help himself. Being with you should not be the only thing allowing him to feel good about himself.
