  • My family depresses me so much.

My Dad is very emotionally abusive. He used to be physically abusive to my brother (a lot actually) but ever since he had a baby with his new wife things have changed. But only because of his wife, not for me/my brother/my sister. He worships the ground she walks on. She is pretty wicked with her attitude, and is always creating problems from nothing. Like I am just trying to mind my own business and if she feels like it, she brings me up negatively to my dad.... who then rains a storm of negativity on me. It seems like I can't do anything right in his eyes, and he also makes comments on my appearance like that I should color my hair, lose weight, etc. I am not even living with him anymore and he still finds a way to ruin my day all the time. I talk about this with people who say that he takes his problems out on me, and I believe that is the case. I feel stuck though, because I love my dad, even though I cry about him every day, whether it's because of something he said to me that day or something I remember he said to me a while ago. I just want to have a good relationship with him but I feel like this has been going on for so many years that I don't know if we can ever have a normal relationship. My brother and sister have a lot of problems like this with him as well. We all have really low self esteem. I can't even look at myself in the mirror because I hate what I see. I don't know.

Having a strained relationship with a parent or any loved one can be difficult. If you believe he is taking his problems out on you, maybe you can try speaking with him about how you feel. Sometimes counseling for a family can be beneficial as well. It all depends on what people in your family are willing to do. In the mean time, try not to let his negativity ruin you. Think of all the special things about yourself that make you unique. It's too bad your father can't see these things, but it's even sadder that you can't. Take some time to really appreciate you for who you are, regardless of your father's comments. Call us anytime to discuss further at 888-222-2228.
